Rss Feeds
What are RSS or News Feeds?
News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. You can get the latest updates to your favorite websites all in one place,
as soon as a web page has been updated..
News feeds are also known as RSS feeds. There is some discussion as to what RSS stands for, but most people know it as "Really Simple Syndication".
In essence, the feeds themselves are just web pages, designed to be read by computers rather than people.
Subscribe to Our RSS Feeds
If you subscribe to our RSS feeds, you will enjoy the convenience of receiving updates when a new auction is added to our calendar or when a closed auction is archived. Just add the feed to your favorite RSS/news reader and you will automatically receive news of a new auction on our site the moment that it is posted. This is a free service that we provide to you as an alternative to receiving email updates. |

How do I subscribe to and how can I read these RSS feeds?
For the most part, all you really need to do is click on the orange RSS button and your browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) will bring you to a page that will ask you if you want to subscribe. It will either ask you where you want to keep the feed and if you want to add it to the favorites bar, if you would like to bookmark the feed, or what you would like to use to subscribe to the feed. The latter is referring to something called a RSS/news reader or news aggregator. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you view
any new auctions that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser (via the buttons you see above which add the feed to your iGoogle page, My Yahoo page, etc), and some of which
are downloadable applications.
Browser-based news readers, like Google Reader, let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications, like Feedreader, let
you store them on your main computer. A good analogy would be reading your email by downloading it to your computer and using Outlook versus reading your email on a web-based
service like Hotmail or Yahoo.
Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive. For example, if you would like to view the most current auction on MillCityAuctions.com, simply visit any page on the site and you will notice an orange button in the upper right corner of the navigation bar. If you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways. Here are a couple easy ways to do it after clicking the button:
- Drag the URL of the feed into your news reader.
- Cut and paste the URL into a new feed in your news reader.

Some browsers, including Explorer, Firefox, Opera and Safari, automatically check for feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon in the address bar
when they find one. This can make subscribing to feeds much easier. For more details on these, please check the browsers' websites. |
